This review is from: White Mountain Puzzles Yard Sale (Toy) I bought 5 or 6 puzzles from Amazon in the last month, all more expensive than I would normally pay, completed 4 of them, and so far this one is the one I enjoyed most and felt was a better quality puzzle and worth the price. This one by White Mountain Puzzles and artist Lorie Schory was so well made, interesting, and great fun to work that I took note of both the puzzle manufacturer and the artist and kept notes so that I could try to get more of this series. This is certainly a “feel good” puzzle that will bring a smile to your face as you go along! The puzzle has slightly larger “fully interlocking pieces”, ( which I much prefer to odd shaped pieces ) and is of nice heavy weight stock, presenting a snug fit. There is a clear variance and individuality in the puzzle die cut pieces, along with the great array of colors, to keep you from mixing up where a piece goes, which I have found I hate about some other puzzles with pieces that are easily “tradeable” by mistake. Besides being made so well, this puzzle is chock full of amusing things one might see at a really huge yard sale. Lots of funny, colorful, and bright or nostalgic 50′s 60′s things can be seen, as well as memorabilia of many other eras, lively junk a big family would collect over the years if they were all a little bit of a packrat! My opinion is that if you catch yourself working a jigsaw puzzle and leaving it partly assembled for a week or more on a table, only going back once in awhile to add 20 or so pieces, then the puzzle isn’t worth what you paid for it. Whether it’s just either incredibly boring, dull looking, or too lame and easy, or too annoyingly impossible due to crazy shaped pointy pieces that don’t really fit well, or a field of green grass all the same shade and a mile of blue blue sky……… then phooey on it! But this isn’t any of those things. This puzzle is the kind that makes you not want to go to bed at one a.m. even though you have to work the next day, because you want to work some more of it!! A simply wonderful “medium” ( difficulty level ) puzzle for adults of any age, or even teens, and I recommend it highly. Traveling to new realms of existence and opening new possibilities for your consciousness can be an enlightening and mind bending experience. Naturally, it can be somewhat of a daunting task to get started. The old saying a journey of 1000 miles starts with a single  step is very applicable to astral travel. While the mystic experience certainly seems exciting, it can be somewhat intimidating to sit down and begin to try.
It can be helpful to have some techniques to at least help you find the edges of the astral planes. What I mean by this is we’ve all experienced an interesting vibration or period of calm either as we go to sleep or wake from sleep. An excellent technique to get started with astral travel is to find this moment of relaxation and focus on it.
There are many different ways in which you can achieve astral travel. The traditional method involves meditation calming yourself and approaching an almost sleep like trance. Then as you begin to notice your unconscious mind, you can then direct your travels or your dreaming in such a manner as to accomplish what you wish.
However there are other ways to approach the state of mind as well. For example, yoga often brings a deep meditation that is unlike any other experience. Being in a calm relaxed and refreshed state of mind often leads to a closer connection with the physical body. As we manipulate our physical being, so to do we learn more about our spiritual being. There is no doubt that the two are intimately connected, but often times we forget about our unconscious mind or spiritual mind or astral body or what ever you want to call it. Yoga can bring you closer to the mindset required to achieve astral travel.

However, that’s not necessarily the only physical activity they can help you get started. Another technique is to focus two points of your body on one another and then meditate on that feeling.
For example, laying down and relaxing is the way that most beginners to start. However, it can be useful to consider rubbing two points of your body together such as your fingertips. Once you get into a relaxed physical state such as a favorite chair, the floor, or any other place that you find relaxing, you can begin to rub the tips of your fingers together. Focus on the sensation. This is a lot like projections vibration which you will experience as you begin to further your astral travels. This can naturally lead you to the state of mind that you will acquire to access the astral planes.

A final technique to consider is to explore the edge of your consciousness as you awake. As you become more aware of your dreaming experiences, you may notice a sensation as you wake up you have a certain amount of control over what you see and hear when you’re not fully awake. Make a habit of staying in the moment, this moment as you awaken, for as  long as you can. Don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t work every time. Sometimes in the morning you may be to preoccupied with everything that you need to do during the day. However in those times where you can focus on that sensation, then do so.  One thing I have discovered is that it helped me cure my Pearly Penile Papules.

These are all techniques that will help you achieve the mindset that you will need for astral travel and projection.  Take your time, enjoy each experience for what it is. Remember, astral travel is a lifelong journey. Astral travel is a wonderful experience in of itself, but the journey towards achieving this state of enlightenment, will also yield its own rewards. Make sure that you enjoy and experience fully each new step along the way.

The jigsaw puzzle is one of the oldest forms of entertainment and dates back to the late 1700s. The jigsaw has passed through many stages of development to become today’s modern pastime. Jigsaw puzzles have a range of uses, from entertainment to education to physical and emotional therapy.

A Beginning as an Educational Tool

The forerunner of the modern jigsaw puzzle was invented in 1767 by John Spilsbury as a teaching device to help children to learn the geography of England and Wales. It was a wooden map with no interlocking pieces. In fact, interlocking pieces weren’t introduced to jigsaws until much later, with the invention of saws that could cut with the accuracy needed to produce the interlock. Introduction of Shaped and Interlocking Pieces

The popularity of jigsaws in the first decade of the 1900s lead Parker Brothers to begin to develop puzzles with interlocking and shaped pieces. Also around this same time cardboard jigsaws began to be produced via die-cutting. Most manufacturers, however, stuck with making wooden puzzles, as the general belief was that there was no market for cheap, cardboard puzzles.

Depression-Era Growth of Jigsaws

With the advent of the Great Depression, demand for inexpensive cardboard, die-cut puzzles exploded. Families discovered that jigsawing was not only entertaining, but a great diversion from the stresses of life. Also, once complete, a jigsaw puzzle could be traded with a friend, continuing the trend of inexpensive entertainment.

A Boost from Advertising

At this time, companies also started using puzzles for promotional giveaways with many stores offering a puzzle with a purchase. At the height of the depression, in the early 1930s, the “Jig of the Week” was introduced and sold at newsstands. Several series became available and being the first to assemble that week’s puzzle resulted in bragging rights for the solver. Economic woes and the rise in popularity of inexpensive puzzles took its toll on the wooden puzzle makers, although some retained a loyal following.

Introduction of the Personalized Jigsaw

During the rise of cardboard puzzles a new manufacturer, Par Puzzles, came into popularity. These hand-cut, finely crafted puzzles were produced by brothers who catered to the affluent, including movie stars and royalty. Par’s claim to fame was personalized puzzles, often cut with their owner’s names as pieces.

Today’s Jigsaw Puzzles

Since the height of popularity during the depression, fascination with the jigsaw puzzle has ebbed and flowed. After World War II rising wages resulted in higher cost and lower sales of wooden jigsaw puzzles. At this same time, improvements in printing and reproduction of fine art on jigsaws resulted in increased sales of cardboard puzzled. Today, most puzzles are cardboard, but there are a handful of manufacturers still making high-quality, wooden jigsaw puzzles. A variety of puzzles are now available, from irregularly shaped puzzles, to doubled-sided jigsaws to 3D jigsaws. They continue to fascinate us and provide a way to bring people together with the common goal of being the one who puts in that last piece.

Most of the high end malls have game or toy stores that have a jig saw puzzle section.

I bought one for my wife at a store like that. She said she could solve any puzzle so I found one of several dozen Dalmatian dogs and the puzzle had 3,500 pieces.

Took her over 6 months but she did it.

These puzzles games range from putting blocks together, guiding a character through a course of obstacles, or even adding 1+1. One thing to be sure of about puzzle games is that they tend to always be one type of puzzle throughout the whole game. Tetris will always have you putting blocks together, the Phoenix Wright series will always have you searching for clues and then going to trial, and Picross will only require you to put dots on a board while following requirements. My point is that I never played a puzzle game that had so much variety of puzzles in it, so that a puzzle isn’t only harder because its longer but harder because it becomes more complicated and requires you to really think hard. That game is Professor Layton and the Curious Village, the first game of the Professor Layton trilogy.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village…well the title pretty much tells the whole story in a way. In more detail, this game is about Professor Layton, a man who really loves puzzles, and his apprentice Luke. They are summoned to a village called St. Mystere. At the village, they are to solve an inheritance dispute regarding the “Golden Apple” which was a treasure left away by a deceased Baron Reinhold. Even more mysteries will soon reveal themselves, like a murder mystery, and even a mystery regarding the village and its villagers.

In order to solve these mysteries, Layton will have to investigate St. Mystere and talk with its villagers. Some villagers may have very helpful info, but in order to get it, you will have to solve the puzzles they give you. Puzzles are what drives the game forward, as the story will not progress unless you complete certain puzzles.

The story is very interesting and may also be a mystery itself. So I was pretty drawn to it from beginning to end.

Gameplay: 8.5/10

The gameplay aspect of PL & the Curious Village is a simple point and click style. You pretty much click where you want to go and where to explore. You pretty much do that for the whole game, until you click certain spots which trigger puzzles. Pretty much all the villagers have a puzzle for you so these puzzles aren’t hard to find. There are some hidden puzzles, so I recommend searching an area closely before moving on.

The main part of the game is, of course, the puzzles. One thing I liked about this game is the variation of puzzles and the ranges of difficulty. Each puzzle is given a story, a situation, or a description. Then you will be given a problem that you must solve using the info you were given. These puzzles range from mathematics, sliding pieces around, finding a certain object within a picture, logic(my favorite), as well as many others. You will solve these puzzles via the touch screen. Requiring touch controls that range from drag and drop, drawing a line, or to simply write a number or letter.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics in PL & the Curious Village aren’t anything revolutionary or mind-blowing, but the style does give off a unique atmosphere. The exploring part pretty much just shows you a background of the town with the animated villagers simply pasted on it. The puzzles are just a bunch of text with a picture for you to interact with. There are some animated cut scenes in the game, so its not all pictures and text. Nothing over-the-top, but the animated style really helps draw out the feeling of the game.

Sound: 8/10

Just like with the graphics, the music really suits this game also. Matching its modern England type style the music really draws you into it. The music is constantly looping over and over but it doesn’t get annoying since it matches so well with the game. Take for instance the puzzle theme, which plays whenever you’re doing a puzzle, it really makes you feel like a detective and gets you thinking. Due to the repetition of these music tracks these songs will grow on you and don’t be surprised if you just suddenly start humming one of the tunes.

There are voices for the characters but it only happens in the introduction and in the cutscenes. Everything else in the game relies on text, so it kinda hurts that there was no voice-over for the whole game since it would really add more feeling to the unique atmosphere surrounding this game. With that aside, the voices that are in, really match the characters and is very well done.

Challenge: 8.5/10

Let me just tell you right now, PL & the Curious Village will make you feel dumb at times. Mainly because of the heavy logic behind these puzzles. Another thing though is the sense of accomplishment you will feel when solving these difficult puzzles. Not all these puzzles are hard though and with a little thinking some puzzles are really easy. If you get stuck though, you are given three hints to help you solve the puzzle. Also if you get the answer wrong you will also be given a hint. These hints aren’t free to use however, and require hint coins which are hidden throughout the game. These coins aren’t too hard to find and their locations are kinda obvious.

You can tell the difficulty of a puzzle by how many “picarats” they are giving you. “Picarats” is this number value that’s attached to each puzzle. The higher the “picarat” rating the more difficult the puzzle. These “picarats” don’t have any real value in the game but they are more like a rating system. Each time you get a puzzle wrong the amount of “Picarats” you receive will decrease. Don’t worry about it decreasing to zero though, the rating will only decrease two times. You can use this to show people how smart you are with a high “Picarat” rating. Although you can cheat by starting the game over once you get the answer, but please don’t and learn to accept your mistakes.

The challenge in Professor Layton and The Curious Village will differ with many people. The reason is because there are so many different puzzles in here and each one will require different amounts of thinking.

Replay Value: 6/10

The length of this game really depends on how long it takes you to solve these puzzles. If you get stuck, it could take you from around 5 minutes to even a day, if the puzzle really has you stumped. That is unless you look to a place like Gamefaqs for the answer.

There are a lot of puzzles to solve with over 130 in all so this game will take you a while to complete no matter what. I beat this game around 19 and a half hours and some people beat in lesser time, so its gonna differ based on how fast you get through the puzzles and how often you play it. I was addicted to this game when I first got it and kinda played it non-stop, but if you limit yourself to like a few puzzles a day or so this game will last a while.

There isn’t much replayability to this game since it relies on puzzles. Once you beat a puzzle theres no sense in going back and solving it again. There are some puzzles though with different ways to solve them so if you’re up for a challenge you can try to find every solution possible for one puzzle. You can also share the game with friends and see how they fare against these puzzles. Another good thing about this game is its Weekly Puzzles. Each week a new puzzle will be released via Wi-fi and you can download it and then solve it. You won’t be given hints to help out, until the following week of that puzzle’s release. Also don’t worry if you missed a puzzle of a certain week because you will be able to download all the puzzles available and they are dated so you can see which one you missed.

At the time of writing this review, all the weekly Wi-fi puzzles have now been released. There is 26 in all so even after beating all the puzzles the game has to offer, there will be a bit more to solve via Wi-fi.

Closing Comments

Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a great game, and the first of three(which I hope will come to the US soon). I recommend this game to any puzzle lover out there. Lots of puzzles are packed into this game, with a nice story, and a unique style to go along with it. The game will last you quite a while, but its hard to replay a puzzle once you know the answer. Overall though, this game is great, and is one of my favorites. With its addictive and rewarding gameplay, Professor Layton is a game you musn’t overlook.

Now that we are in the business of designing and creating jigsaw puzzles, we might as well share a few facts about jigsaws and the evolution they have undergone over time. To begin with, a jigsaw puzzle is a tiling riddle that requires the assembly of numerous small, often oddly shaped, interlocking and tessellating pieces. Each piece usually has a small part of a picture on it which when solved produces a complete picture. In some cases more advanced types have appeared on the market, such as spherical jigsaws and puzzles showing Optical Illusions.

Jigsaw puzzles were originally created by painting a picture on a flat, rectangular piece of wood, and then cutting that picture into small pieces with a jigsaw, hence the name. John Spilsbury, a London mapmaker and engraver, is credited with commercializing jigsaw puzzles around 1760. Jigsaw puzzles have since come to be made primarily on cardboard.

Typical images found on jigsaw puzzles include scenes from nature, buildings, and repetitive designs. We have added a punch to this by introducing puzzles on Kenyan wildlife, landscapes and people. All our puzzles have a secret hidden within the puzzle that can only be revealed once the puzzle is completed.

Most modern jigsaw puzzles are made out of cardboard, since they are easier and cheaper to mass produce than the original wooden models. An enlarged photograph or printed reproduction of a painting or other two-dimensional artwork is glued onto the cardboard before cutting. This board is then fed into a press. The press forces a set of hardened steel blades of the desired shape through the board until it is fully cut.

This procedure is similar to making shaped cookies with a cookie cutter. The forces involved, however, are tremendously greater and a typical 1000-piece puzzle will require a press which can generate upwards of 700 tons of force to push the knives of the puzzle die through the board. A puzzle die comprises a flat board, often made from plywood, which has slots cut or burned in the same shape as the knives that will be used. These knives are set into the slots and covered in a compressible material, typically foam rubber, the function of which is the ejection of the cut puzzle pieces. New technology has enabled laser-cutting of wooden jigsaw puzzles, which is a growing segment of the high-end jigsaw puzzle market.

Jigsaw puzzles typically come in 300-piece, 500-piece, 750-piece, and 1,000-piece sizes. However, the largest commercial puzzle has 32,256 pieces and spans 544cm by 192cm. The most common layout for a thousand-piece puzzle is 38 pieces by 27 pieces, for a total count of 1,026 pieces. The majority of 500-piece puzzles are 27 pieces by 19 pieces. Children’s jigsaw puzzles come in a great variety of sizes, rated by the number of pieces. A few puzzles are made double-sided, so that they can be solved from either side. This adds a level of complexity, because it cannot be certain that the correct side of the piece is being viewed and assembled with the other pieces.

There are also three-dimensional jigsaw puzzles. Many of these are made of wood or Styrofoam and require the puzzle to be solved in a certain order; some pieces will not fit in if others are already in place. Also common are puzzle boxes: simple three-dimensional jigsaw puzzles with a small drawer or box in the center for storage.

Another type of jigsaw puzzle, which is considered a 3-D puzzle, is a puzzle globe. However like a 2-D puzzle, a globe puzzle is often made of cardboard and the assembled pieces form a single layer. But mainly like a 3-D puzzle, the final form is a three-dimensional shape. Most globe puzzles have designs representing spherical shapes such as the Earth, the Moon, and historical globes of the Earth.

There are also computer versions of jigsaw puzzles, which have the advantages of requiring zero cleanup as well as no risk of losing any pieces. Many computer based jigsaw puzzles do not allow pieces to be rotated although our premium JigsawQuest® puzzles have this feature. This means that all pieces in most computer-based jigsaws are displayed in their correct orientation. However, it’s important to note that the game is played by all players SIMULTANEOUSLY – which does get the pace picked up quite a bit. You have to be pretty quick in “slamming” a card down to create your new word while the other players are all trying to do the same thing. Thus the four-letter word is ever-changing. I saw the commercial for this game on TV and being from a family that loves games about to head out on a family vacation, went to Target where I saw it for about . We played it with four adults, three adults and two adults and during each of those scenarios, had a blast. It was fun trying to stump each other with rare four-letter words. My mom has recommended it to several of her friends who have grandchildren. It’s a great game for kids learning to spell and to challenge their word skills. Warning: After several rounds of this game, you’ll find yourself on the lookout for four-letter words all the time! However, one Sunday morning I noticed a coupon in the USA Today insert which advertised a buy one get one free offer for Hasbro/Parker Brother’s new card games. I picked up “Monopoly Deal” and this game, “Scrabble Slam”. As card games go this one is pretty simple. A four letter word is laid out on the table (CHUM, LUMP, GATE, etc) and the remaining cards are dealt out to each player. Not all letters are present in the “deck” of 55 cards. There are no Q’s and no X’s, although there are couple of Z’s and several Blanks (which can assume the form of whatever letter you want them to take, just like the Scrabble board game). Each card has two letters on it, one on the front and one on the back, and this allows the player a lot of flexibility to change words that are on the board. Each player then takes it in turn to lay down a single card anywhere on the 4 letter word. For instance, player 1 may spell GRIM and player two lays down a P to make it GRIP. Player 1 may respond with a T making it TRIP. As the game progresses it can become somewhat challenging to make words out and needless to say that you’ll want to get rid of the harder letters as soon as possible (Z, J, K, etc.) because if that’s all you have left at the end of the game you’re going to be in a world of hurt. The person with the fewest cards at the end of the game wins. If one wants to up the difficulty a bit simply up the number of letters in the word. Just making it 5 letters long had a noticeable effect and made it much more challenging. I rate this game at 3 1/2 stars. It’s not really a great game but I’ve certainly played worse. It passes the time, which is what it was designed to do, and does so well enough. Pros: -Very, very easy game to learn -Your kids will have fun and learn words along the way. Not a bad thing at all. -At .00 at my local Wally World (do *not* pay the .00 they have listed here) this game is a great value. -The game plays very quickly, clocking in at 20 minutes or less. Cons: -It’s not exactly the most exciting game in the world -Depending upon the number of players and the number of letters on the board some players may get more cards than others, and that makes it a bit unfair trying to determine who the winner will be. -The Dealer is going to see what cards everyone is getting, although only a MENSA candidate with a photographic memory is going to be able to remember who has what. I bought this game at Target for less than .00. It is fun to play and stimulates your brain somewhat, but not to the extent of the original Scrabble game. You can modify the rules and play it with younger players (we play it with our four year old). Amazon also lists a bunch of choking hazard warnings with this product. Unless your kid can swallow a playing card there is no choking hazard that I can find. It is worth .00 but not .00. This book contains rules and generally clear descriptions of play for an incredibly long list of games. In addition to card games, the book covers many board games, such as Scrabble and chess, and even a few computer games. There is no question that there are books that cover individual games in much more depth, but it’s hard to argue with the low price of this volume when it comes to the sheer number of brief descriptions of games that it offers. Highly recommended to have on hand.
